New Work - as the weather warms towards another summer.

I have been drawing and painting a bit lately, with a few projects on the go. I have been making some art for the Response zine - a zine being made by people in the US who have been involved in community response to sexual assault. I will put more of the sketches up soon.

I have been doing lots of sketches, inks and drawings of my home - Bundabah and the bays. Here are a few for you.

Ocean Inspired Art Exhibition

August 14 & 15, 2010

My piece ' Orange Roughy' was inspired by the endangered deep see Orange Roughy Fish...

A marine themed Art exhibition in Victoria Park. All work on display is for sale to support both the Artist’s and the campaign to protect our unique South West Marine life. The exhibition is an awareness raising and fundraising event for the Save our Marine Life campaign.

Save Our Marine Life is an unprecedented collaboration of Australian and international conservation organisations working to protect and secure Australia’s unique marine life. Less than 1% of WA’s South West marine life is protected. Our political leaders will be making big decisions about this in the next couple of weeks – we need to make it clear that 1% protection is not enough.

Where: Victoria Park Centre for the Arts at 12 Kent St East Victoria Park. When: Opening night is at 6pm on the 14th of August. The work will be on display on both the 14th and 15th of August.

Coal Tea Room

This urban intervention is in the style of a traditional Japanese Tea Room. A tea ceremony will take place in this specially designed room...

The inspiration for the tea room is Newcastle's coal industry: and the industrial revolution that has been fueled by coal. In our modern lives we have so many commodities that we use every day. Goods have become cheap, thanks to industrialism - but at what cost? The environment has suffered greatly, and along the way humanity has lost connection with the natural world.

The tea house is a place to contemplate these issues.

The materials used in the construction of the Tea house are as natural as possible: wood, sand, paper, cotton. These natural building materials remind us of the simple pleasures found in nature.

The lighting is a very important factor in the tea house design. The bright natural light has been blocked out and gentle candle light is the main light source. This light creates a calm atmosphere.

Inspired by local Kattung(Indigenous) totems the eagle and the shark and circle symbols for a meeting place (with consultation from local Indigenous sovereigns.)

I'm in Perth at the moment, staying in the Hills (East of the City) in a town called Mundaring, where I grew up. It is interestig to be back in a community I know well, but have not been based in for 10 years or so.

I am making a series of prints and patches for clothing...
I hope to print this series on hemp fabric. Produced
by people being paid wages they deserve for their work - ie not from a
sweat shop.

I have been researching fabric production for a number of years, and it
is horrific how people are treated in the fabric manufacturing industries.

I hope to find a source of 'Australia Made' hemp - please let me now if there is anyone out there making their own hemp.

As far as I know, there is no Australia made HEMP....
